Worthing College Sports Academy
What is the Worthing College Sports Academy?
The Worthing College Sports Academy provides aspiring young sports-people with the opportunity to enhance their sports performance and further their academic study. The Sports Academy is designed to ensure students can choose from the College’s wide range of academic subjects and complete a weekly 8-10 hour sports performance programme; all Academy sessions are timetabled and make up part of the students’ College day.
The Sports Academy is a high quality programme and consists of the following squads:
Basketball (men’s and women’s)
Dance (men’s and women’s)
Football (men’s and women’s)
Golf (men’s and women’s)
Hockey (men’s and women’s)
Netball (women's only)
Rugby (men's only)
Tennis (men’s and women’s)
Sport at the College is going from strength to strength; in recognition of our achievements we received the 2007 Specialist Sports College of the Year award. Academy staff are highly skilled and the programme includes video analysis, sports psychology, sports nutrition, strength and conditioning, skill development, game understanding development and team preparation for the weekly Wednesday fixture. Training and
fixtures are based at the College and Worthing Leisure Centre and Academy squads compete in local, regional and national competitions.
Academy squads are linked with local and regional clubs ensuring that students have appropriate progression pathways; these links are crucial so that Academy students have a well managed transition to senior level sport.
Which academic subjects can I choose if I join the Sports Academy?
All Academy members follow full time programme of study. Academy applicants who wish to follow a vocational route are advised to study a BTEC National Diploma in Sport
A-level students can chose a mixture of subjects but are advised to include A-level PE or BTEC National Award in Sport (the vocational alternative to A-level PE).
How will my Sports Academy work be assessed?
Academy students will be subject to regular fitness and performance testing that will be used to measure progress. Academy students undertake additional qualifications within the Academy programme which underpin their sports and performance development. In addition to study at the College students are also expected to undertake a level 1 NGB (National Governing Bodies) coaching or officiating award.
Are there any specific entry requirements for the Sports Academy?
Academy places are limited and the selection process is very competitive with all Academy applicants being required to trial and have a sporting reference completed.
International students will have to submit a 45 minute video or DVD of themselves. You may also post video onto YouTube. Late applicants who apply after the summer trials may still be able to secure an Academy place; however places will be extremely limited, an early application is recommended.
An essential part of the year is the Academy pre-season week that runs from the first Monday of September (please make sure that any holidays being booked avoid this date).
Pre-season week is a crucial time in preparing every Academy student for the year ahead and includes daily training as well as seminars in; sports nutrition, sports psychology, time management and preparation for high level academic performance. It is important to note that the Academy is a one-year programme and that existing academy members will re-trial annually with the new applicants. Academy students are expected to meet high attendance, punctuality and performance standards.
